We redesigned Serv-U from 2005 to 2008 to take full advantage of 64-bit operating systems, multithreading, modern web concepts, IPv6 and other technology. Secure file transfer refers to the ability of the product to support vendor-independent protocols such as FTP over SSL (FTPS, FTP using SSH (SFTP) and HTTP over SSL (HTTPS). All three of these protocols encrypt data in transit and all three are supported by Serv-U Gold and Serv-U Platinum.

"Managed file transfer" is a term coined by Gartner in the mid 2000's to describe mission-critical activities built on top of secure file transfer and automation technologies. Serv-U Platinum provides mission-critical services through high availability, a multi-tier "gateway" architecture that avoids data in the DMZ, event-driven automation, and the three most popular secure file transfer protocols (FTPS, SFTP, HTTPS).
